For Angelina Ramirez, the art of Flamenco dancing has always been a passion she’s held close to her heart. This passion began at a very young age, when Ramirez received her first formal dance training at the age of 9 with Flamenco teachers Deanna Pierce and Olivia Rojo. Over the next several years, Ramirez diligently continued her Flamenco studies and by the age of 16, she became a member of Rojo’s Flamenco y Mas Dance Company.
Ramirez’ dedication to her art allowed her to tour throughout the United States as a featured artist with the National Theater Company. She continued her studies at the National Institute of Flamenco Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico and became an original member of Yjastros, the American Flamenco Repertory Company under the direction of Joaquin Encinias. Many opportunities continued to become available to Ramirez as she continued to pursue her dancing career. In the summer of 2006, she traveled to Spain to study with flamenco artists, Angel Atienza and Isabel Byon. That next year Ramirez also had the great opportunity to perform in CALO Flamenco Ballet de Martin Gaxiola’s production, ‘LEVANTO.’
Phoenix, Arizona is now where Ramirez calls home, where she teaches and works with various Flamenco companies. In the Summer of 2009 Angelina developed a project called Flamenco Por La Vida, Making their debut at which consist of a flamenco curriculum and performance with her dance partner Carlos Montufar. and student company. Flamenco Por La Vida made their first debut at Tucson’s Spanish and Flamenco Festival. Now you can watch FPLV perform around the Phoenix Valley. In 2011 Angelina with collaborators Monica Robles and Ruben Gonzalez opened 5th Row Dance Studios where flamenco, yoga, hip hop and other dance classes are offered and taught by masters from the valley. Ramirez looks forward to what her journey will bring her as she continues to live her life- long passion as an artist of Flamenco.
