There are many legends about Mid-Autumn Festival. One of the most famous is about the beautiful goddess named Chang’e. The story goes that long, long ago, there were ten suns in the sky that caused great drought and suffering for the people. A skilled archer named Hou Yi shot down nine of the suns, leaving only one for the earth. As a reward for his bravery, the Queen of Heaven gave him an elixir that granted immortality. However, Hou Yi’s wife, Chang’e, drank the elixir and floated up to the moon, where she stayed forever. On Mid-Autumn Festival, people celebrate Chang’e’s beauty and pray for their own happiness.
